A royal forest
A former royal forest, the State Forest of the Fanges flourished under Colbert, who intended these large fir trees for the mature ships of the Sun King. It is located at the end of a karst plateau delimited on the one hand by the Gorges de Pierre Lys and on the other hand by the road from Quillan to Fenouillèdes by the Col de Saint Louis. Paradise of speleologists there are more than 100 cavities, Dolines and Avens.
Between maquis and mushrooms
With a remarkable floral richness, we find fir and beech trees that rub shoulders with holm oaks and kerme oaks, scots pines and birches. The forest is inhabited by deer, deer and wild boar, which are crossed during mushroom picking "ceps, morels and rusillous" which are the delight of amateurs. It is also in this forest that the guerrillas hid during the war.
